WILLIAM FERGUSSON (1808-1877)
William Ferguson, who changed from law to study medicine,
became a successful English physician, who attended both Queen Victoria
and Prince Albert. He studied at Edinburgh, and was knighted in 1866. He
was President of the Pathological Society and of the British Medical
Association.
He was a skillful and practical surgeon, who made many
of his own surgical instruments. He was known for the speed with which
he operated.
His work, A System of Practical Surgery, was highly
regarded. It was published in 1842, and passed through five editions
during his lifetime. This is the third American edition, published
in 1848.
