JOHN FREIND
(1675-1728)
John Friend, who was trained as a physician, also
turned his attention to the history of medicine. Suspected of Jacobite
sympathy, he spent nearly a year in the Tower of London. During that
time he wrote his most important work, The History of Physic from the
Time of Galen to the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century, “to pass
away a few leisure hours.” With this study he gained the
reputation as the first English medical historian.
The History of Physick was published in two volumes
in 1725, and it passed through numerous later editions and translations.
It still remains a good chronicle, particularly concerning English
medicine during the Renaissance.
This copy is the first volume of the third edition, published in two
volumes in 1727.
