This volume is actually a collection
of gynecological and obstetrical texts by five authors, gathered under the names of Severin Pineau
and Luigi Bonacciuoli. This edition was published in 1650.
Sererin Pineau was a Parisian physician and surgeon to the king. His is
chiefly remembered for his work in gynecology and obstetrics. His
treatise, De virginitatis notis, graviditate & partu, was at the time considered to be quite frank because of its discussion of virginity
and its loss. In fact some copies this book were confiscated because of
the subject matter.
Luigi Bonacciuoli practiced medicine in Ferrara.
This book was the first publication of his De conformatione fetus,
concerning the fetus.
Felix Platter was one the first German anatomists to
dissect the human body. He is best known for his De corporis humani
structra et usa, published in 1583. The present work contains
his treatise, De origine partium, earumque in utero cinformatione,
in which he writes about the origin of arteries, veins and nerves.
Frenchman, Pierre Gassendi , was not only a doctor, but also
scientist and philosopher. This volume contains the only published
version of De septo cordis pervio, observatio, which is the first
description of the foremen ovale of the heart.
Melchoi Sebish was a professor of medicine at the University
of Strassbourg. In this book, he too looks at virginity in his De
notis virginitatis.
