THORNTON BARRETTE

Special Collections has one small Thornton Berrette photographic card, taken in Huntington, among its still image collections. It is stamped on the back in purple ink: “Thornton Barrette's Photography / Arm Gallery / Huntington, W.Va.” 
     Barrette had a studio for a time in Huntington, probably in the late 1870s. He moved to Ironton, Ohio, before 1884, where he opened a studio on the corner of Second and Centre Streets. His business was quite successful and operated it until at least until 1891. Special Collections also has a single cabinet card from his studio in Ironton, Ohio. Barrette is best known for his photographs of the Ohio River, especially its steamboats
    The Henry Spanner Family Collection in the Special Collections, D. H. Ramsey Library, University of North Carolina at Ashville, has a number of his photographs in a cabinet card album.
