Clearing in the Sky& Other Stories
was Jesse Stuart’s fourth book of
collected short stories to be issued,
this time by a new publisher. In the
book’s twenty stories, “There is action and plenty of it in these tales,
but also there are quiet, deeper
moments” (Dust jacket). The book received praise
and acclaim by the book critics,
including such phrases as “ballad-like
stories of the hills;” “more superb tales
of...mountain folk by a superb
craftsman,” and a “marvelous ear
for the dialect of his people”
(Richardson, Jesse, 338).
The copy in the Jesse Stuart Collection
includes a type-written letter (tipped
in) from Jesse Stuart to Henry Lee
Shattuck, dated January 12, 1952.
