West Virginia Collection

West Virginia map

The West Virginia Collection is a regional collection of published materials that deals with West Virginia and surrounding states, particularly Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. The collection also emphasizes the Appalachian Region, as well as the American Civil War.

The collection includes books, journals, state documents, newspapers, a vertical file of newspaper clippings and pamphlets, maps, phone books, and microforms.

Patrons may browse books of fiction and family history. The rest of the collection is contained in a Closed Stack Area. The Special Collections staff provides assistance in retrieving materials not available for public browsing.

You will find a copy of West Virginia: A Historical Resource Guide, prepared to complement the four-part video history of West Virginia used in the public schools.

The image on the left is a copy of The County Map of Virginia and West Virginia, printed in 1863 by S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., showing the original boundary of the eastern panhandle.
