LaTeX

LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system designed for the production of technical and scientific documents. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents, especially Mathematics.  LaTeX is available on all platforms but the information below is for Microsoft Windows since that is the predominately used operation system used at Marshall University.

Set up your LaTeX environment

MiKTeX is an up-to-date LaTeX implementation for the Windows operating system. To install go to www.MikTeX.org and from the Download/Install section download the current version.  Choose from the basic or complete installation.  In most cases the basic installation is best as additional packages are easily installed later.  For best results let the installer install the program in the default location.

Choose an editor

Several editors are available that integrate tools using LaTeX .
  • Texmaker - a free LaTeX editor, that integrates many tools needed to develop documents with LaTeX, in just one application. Runs on unix, macosx and windows systems.

  • TeXnicCenter - a free integrated development environment (IDE) for developing LaTeX-documents on Microsoft Windows.

  • WinEdt - (shareware) is a powerful and versatile ASCII editor for Microsoft Windows with a strong predisposition towards the creation of LaTeX documents.
