Matlab
Matlab
integrates computation, data analysis, visualization, and algorithm
development in one complete environment. It is easy to learn and use,
and offers an intuitive language for expressing and solving
problems. Matlab is often referred to as The Language of Technical Computing.
If you're studying mathematics, engineering, or a science field, Matlab
can be a valuable resource to you.
Availability on Campus
For the 2007/08 academic year, Matlab is available in the SH 532 Lab,
the Corbly 436 Lab, and the ML 119 Lab, as well as various single computers
around campus.
Student version
A student
version is available for $99 that has all the features of the
regular version plus it comes with the symbolic toolbox. The
symbolic toolbox adds functionality found in computer algebra systems such as
Maple and Mathematica.

Among the many resources found here are links to tutorials and m files
for just about any application imaginable.
Books
Matlab has become so widely used that there are a large number of books
on its use and application. Here are a few that have been found
useful:
-
MATLAB:
An Introduction with Applications 2nd Edition by Amos Gilat, ISBN
0471694207. (A good place to start)
-
MATLAB
Guide by Desmond J. Higham, Nicholas J. Higham, ISBN: 0898715784.
(A good second book)
-
Differential
Equations with Matlab by Brian R. Hunt, Ronald L. Lipsman, John E.
Osborn, Jonathan M. Rosenberg, ISBN: 0471718122. Supplemental book for MTH 335.
