"A Remedial Program for Medical Students, Residents, and Physicians who are Learning Disabled/Dyslexic and/or ADHD "

Students are applying for admission to medical schools who have Learning Disabilities and/or Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (LD/ADHD). In most cases they have worked hard in college, and their credentials are good (with the likely exception of low scores on the Medical College Admissions Test).

In the past, a number of well-known dyslexics have made substantial contributions in various disciplines, including a few in medicine. Without appropriate assistance, however, many students will be unable to compete successfully in medical school and/or residencies. With prescribed accommodations they can compete and become competent, creative professionals who contribute significantly to medicine.

Medical students/physicians with LD/ADHD must be held to the same standards expected of other students. In our experience, they usually require primarily:

  1. Assistance with study skills
  2. Limited academic tutoring in some basic science classes
  3. Extended time on examinations
  4. Separate rooms for exams in order to avoid distractions

Medical H.E.L.P. is a five week course that makes it possible for medical students and physicians to reach their goals. Individual tutoring sessions are available for physicians. This program is a part of the College of Education and Human Services at Marshall University (Huntington, WV). Participants are accepted from all states as well as foreign countries. To the best of our knowlege, Medical H.E.L.P. is the only program of its type that is currently available.
