At the 15th annual MELUS conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, members did some soul-searching. What I appreciated about the over 100 papers and creative readings was the effort that many people made to “take stock” of our field of study. The questions that the initial call for papers raised were taken seriously, and the resulting discussions and debates felt like the dawning of a new day. My presidential address considered the “multi” part of the MELUS equation. My strategy was to raise a few questions and say some provocative things to get us going. Apparently it worked, for I witnessed and overheard discussions in meeting rooms and hallways that went beyond the “I really liked your paper” variety. People seemed eager to talk.
When you taught this work, did you consider this, that, and the other contextual points? an audience participant asked her panelists. Don’t try to pass off conference papers as article submissions to our journals, warned the editors of Callaloo and MELUS. This ethnic work has literary value because its aesthetic qualities enable a fresh understanding of a complex subject, another scholar asserted. There were also moments of tension and open confrontation. At the Saturday luncheon session, John Wideman called Amy (Arlene) Elder’s articulation of an audience participant’s self-revelation “reductive.” “I agree with 99% of what you just said,” Wideman stated, “but I still characterize your earlier formulation as reductive.” Elder held her own—on her feet and facing the stage to engage Wideman. I am sure that this was not a comfortable moment for many of us. It was a valuable moment nonetheless. At scholarly conferences we tend to keep our distance in the name of “professionalism.” To tell someone what we really think, even if it’s not the polite thing to say, requires caring enough to make the effort. The point is, the interchange demonstrated that we can survive such disagreements with our integrity intact. Open engagement isn’t lethal.
The participation of John Wideman, Shay Youngblood, LaVonne Ruoff, Roberta Hill, Charles Rowell, Ed Bullins, Jeffrey Allen, José Torres-Padilla—new and familiar faces at MELUS conferences—gave the conference a homey, family feeling. Donna Sherwood and Ron Bailey—our Knoxville hosts—were superb in extending the sense of welcome and purpose that many conference attendees remarked upon. The poetry performance that Sherwood’s students gave during the Thursday night open mike put all of us arrhythmic, stodgy readers to shame. They’re doing something right at Knoxville College!
At the general business meeting on Saturday, the MELUS Executive Committee formed three standing committees (Conference, Development and Publicity, and Governance) to help do the work. Several individuals—both newcomers and continuing members—volunteered for each committee, thus renewing our faith that MELUS is a cross-cultural, cross-racial, and fundamentally communal enterprise. For one reason or another (illness, grant-writing, earthquake, etc.), several MELUS “old-timers” had to miss this year’s conference and they were sorely missed. Nevertheless, the indomitable MELUS spirit pulled through. For those of you who knew something about the major obstacles confronting this year’s conference, I trust you’ll agree that we collectively “pulled it off.” Assuming that Seattle has had its quota of earthquakes for the next fifty years, I look forward to seeing all of you at next year’s conference. Please read the “call for papers” included in this issue of NewsNotes and start working on your proposal for the 2002 MELUS conference!

ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM BONNIE TUSMITH
MELUS Executive Committee
retreat (June 7-10, 2001, U of Connecticut, Storrs, CT)
The five-member Executive
Committee (EC), MELUS Editor, and Graduate Student Representative will
meet in June to hash out the present and future needs of the Society.
While the newly constituted Standing Committees will not be at the retreat,
committee chairs will provide the EC with progress reports in relation
to their planned tasks. In addition, any MELUS member who wishes
to have the EC consider a great idea for the Society should email a brief
proposal (preferably as a file attachment in Microsoft Word) to Bonnie
TuSmith (btusmith@hotmail.com).
MELUS 2002 Conference (April
11-14, Best Western University Tower Hotel, Seattle, WA)
Professor Steve Sumida and
Dean Johnnella Butler at University of Washington will host next year’s
MELUS conference. Because Steve will be teaching in Japan this fall,
the MELUS EC will be handling the scholarly programming (review of proposals,
etc.) for the conference. The conference hotel is two blocks from
the UW campus. We have reserved a block of rooms at $109 (single
or double), $119 (triple), $129 (quadruple), continental breakfast included.
Built in the 1920s, this hotel is being refurbished so that we will enjoy
new facilities next April. Individuals who will be sharing a room
should reserve double beds if needed (these are limited). Please
specify that you are attending the MELUS Conference when you make your
reservations—otherwise, we will be strapped with a huge bill for meeting
rooms. After the MELUS blocked rooms are filled, you will be directed
to an overflow hotel nearby. Finally, please note from the call for
papers that the deadline for proposals is October 1, 2001. We will
send out acceptance notices by early November. This should give you
ample time to make travel arrangements. See you all in Seattle!

Wendy Rountree as head of the MELUS Graduate Student Caucus and representative
at Executive Committee meetings. Wendy will receive her PhD in June
and has already landed a tenure-track position. Congratulations to
both U of Cincinnati graduate students. MELUS folks are on the move!

In December 2000, former MELUS editor Joseph Skerrett, Jr. was named the winner of the Distinguished Retiring Editor Award, by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals.
The judges were admiring of Skerrett's great commitment to MELUS and the fruit born of it: "Skerrett took a journal that was suffering from inefficiency and division and turned it into a working, functional operation and a major contribution to scholarship in the field of multiethnic literatures. He found financial support and a 'home' for the journal, expanded ts mission, and worked to make its ties to the MELUS organization clear and productive. His special issues have been particularly well received and influential. MELUS is the journal my students turn to first in the r research on multiethnic literature and it continues to not only stay current with the conversation generated by young scholars but it remains out ahead, generating new areas for excellent scholarship." "From a mimeographed newsletter to a printed journal without publisher to a stable publication of the Society for the Study of Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States," Skerrett has certainly "saved this journal from demise and is responsible for its healthy state today." During his twelve-year editorship, MELUS has gotten better and better, and it has been an important force in shaping the study of ethnic literature and in setting high standards for scholarly research and writing in that developing area of learning. My book _Revisionary Identities:
Strategies of Empowerment in the Writing of Italian/American Women_ has

I discuss the poetry of Maria
Mazziotti Gillan, Rose Romano, Maria Fama, Sandra Gilbert and Gigi Marino
among others. I devote a chapter to the feminist
agenda in Helen Barolini's
_Umbertina_, and I also discuss the fiction of Susan Leonardi and Mary
Bucci Bush. I argue that these works reveal their authors'
multiple and often conflicting
identities. For these writers, the categories of race, class, gender,
and religion blur, causing conflicts, which they try to resolve by imagining

Articles should examine the intersections of gender, race, class, ethnicity and/or sexuality in the cultures and literatures (any genre) of the Early Americas to 1800. Disciplines may include literature, religion, history, art history,and studies of women, masculinities, Native Americans, African Americans, Latin Americans, and the Caribbean. U.S. women periodical editors,
18th -20th century, that go beyond biography. "Periodicals" may be
conceived broadly, including magazines, newspapers, women's editions, gift
annuals, amateur press periodicals, children's magazines, zines, U.S.-based
publications in languages other than English, etc. We also
welcome papers about organizations of women in the profession, connections
between publications, and editors who worked on more than one publication.
Essays might consider the political programs of editors; the relationship
of editing to writing and other tasks; the collaborative nature of editing;
the power or lack of power of the editing
role; the visibility or invisibility
of the editor and her work; women's editing for female or male readers;
the editor's relationship to her readers, and much else.
Essays should be a maximum of 7500 words, including endnotes and Works Cited. Please submit two copies of your completed article, along with a disk (compatible with MS Word or Wordperfect. The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2001.

Sites of Ethnicity: Europe and the Americas
This conference will highlight
the comparative aspects of ethnic sites between the Americas and Europe
or within the Americas but with some reference to Europe. In the spirit
of MESEA, papers should be informed by a comparison between the Americas
and Europe either on a thematic or on a methodological level. Proposals

Call for Submissions - SAIL: Studies in American Indian Literatures
SAIL is the only scholarly journal in the United States that focuses exclusively on American Indian literatures. This quarterly journal publishes reviews, interviews, bibliographies, creative work, and pedagogical, scholarly, critical and theoretical articles on American Indian literatures (written, oral and performed). We encourage all scholars who work with American Indian texts to submit essays to SAIL.

The Ethnic Home and the American
Literary Culture: Three Italian American Women Writers
The establishment of literary standards for multiethnic texts requires a rethinking of all evaluative criteria because poetry and fiction embody culture. Ethnic writers are always dialoguing with, stretching, bending and ultimately enriching the tradition of American Literature by contrasting the established criteria to other perspectives and other traditions. Sandra Gilbert's poem, "The Grandmother Dream," Helen Barolini's novel _Umbertina_, and Rita Ciresi's novel _Blue Italian_ use traditional forms such as the sonnet, the modernist novel, and Greek tragedy, but both acquiesce to and rebel against established structures in order to represent their ethnicity. Multiethnic texts are influenced by two cultures--the ethnic home from which the text emerges, and the American literary culture in which it moves. Both influences must be acknowledged.
