What is Second Life?

Second Life (SL) is an Internet-based virtual world develed by Linden Labs.  Second Life users, called are called “residents,” and they interact with other through avatars (3-D digital personas).   Second Life is a social network where residents can explore, meet other residents, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade items and services, pursue educational activities, etc.  The possibilites in Second Life are limitless.

Marshall University has recently developed an island – MUOnline - in Second Life that will allow students, alumni, and anyone interested in the University to visit the campus virtually and to experience some of the attractions Marshall has to offer.  Residents may work out in the Recreation Center or try the rock climbing wall, visit the First year Dorms,  e-mail Student Support Services, and attend seminars and events.

How Do I Get Started in SL?

 It is very easy to get started in Second Life - just follow the three, easy steps below:

1.  Go to www.secondlife.com and download the Second Life viewer, which is located at the bottom right corner of the page – “Download Second Life.”
 
2.  Then, click on “Join Now” and create your avatar (a 3-D digital persona).

3.  You may now access our island by typing in our web address: http://slurl.com/secondlife/MUOnline/79/109/29 and clicking on Teleport.
