MU-ADVANCE Path Forward Student Travel Award


Travel Grants are available for female students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines seeking to enhance networking, present at national meetings, or attend workshops to advance their careers.


All full-time, students of Marshall University in the College of Science, College of Information Technology and Engineering, School of Medicine (basic science departments), and Departments of Psychology, Sociology/Anthropology, and Geography are eligible for funding. The travel must be completed by September 30, 2018.


Travel can include such activities as tuition for professional development courses, registration and travel expenses for professional meetings, workshops, and other similar activities that will enhance career development.


BUDGET: Each eligible student is limited to one grant per academic year up to $500.


DEADLINE: October 31, 2017


Submit the completed application form to by the application deadline. This application requires:

  1. A brief summary of the travel with clearly stated: 1) objectives, 2) significance of the travel, and 3) the anticipated professional development outcome.
  2. A budget summary to include the projected cost of registration, travel, meals, and other associated costs. Also, indicate the source of the matching funds, if any.
  3. Applications are limited to one page in length.

Applications will be reviewed by members of the MU-ADVANCE Path Forward Committee. The highest endorsements will be given to travel that offers the greatest opportunity for professional development. The Committee will consider the following criteria when selecting successful applications:

  1. Is the application complete?
  2. Are goals and objectives clearly stated?
  3. Is the long-term impact of the project clearly stated?
  4. Is the proposed activity an appropriate match for the written explanation of how the project will improve the applicant's professional development?
  5. Is there a clear statement of the amount of funding being requested and how these funds are to be spent?
  6. Preference will be given to students who did not receive funding the previous year.

Applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision within three weeks of the deadline.
