Congratulations to the Faculty

MU-ADVANCE proudly acknowledges the five female faculty affiliates honored at the General Faculty Meeting on April 28, 2009.  Drs. Tina Cartwright, Tracy Christofero, Piyali Dasgupta, Bonita Lawrence, and Wendy Williams were recognized for their achievements.  All five have received funding support from MU-ADVANCE to enhance their faculty development: all were awarded mini-grants, two received new faculty fellowships, and one received the coveted faculty fellowship.  We applaud their success and wish them well with their future academic endeavors.

Dr. Tina Cartwright received the Sarah Denman Faces of Appalachia Fellowship Award, presented each year to one faculty member.  Dr. Cartwright will further investigate how minority and female Appalachian students interact, contribute, and benefit from participating in the Communities Educating Tomorrow’s Scientists (COMETS).  Fellows receive a $3,000 cash award, as well as six hours of release time during their one-year tenure.  For more information on COMETS, visit www.wvscience.org/comets/.  Dr. Cartwright is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education.

Dr. Piyali Dasgupta received the Marshall University Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award.  Each year a junior faculty is selected for their artistic and scholarly activity.  Dr. Dasgupta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Toxicology at Marshall’s School of Medicine.

Dr. Tracy Christofero received one of three Graduate Advisor of the Year Awards.  Dr. Christofero is an Associate Professor of Technology Management, as well as the Technology Management Program Coordinator.

Dr. Bonita Lawrence received the Charles E. Hedrick Outstanding Faculty Award.  The Hedrick Award is granted to a faculty member who has excelled at teaching, scholarship, research, and creative work.  Dr. Lawrence will receive a $5,000 stipend.  She is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics.

Dr. Wendy Williams received the Pickens-Queen Excellence in Teaching Award.  This award honors junior faculty who have demonstrated exemplary teaching.  Awardees receive a $1,000 stipend.  Dr. Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology.
