Dr. Piyali Dasgupta wins ASPET-Astellas Award

Dr. Piyali Dasgupta, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Toxicology at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, has received an ASPET-Astellas Award in Translational Pharmacology.  This award is presented by The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), and is funded by the Astellas Foundation.  Recipients are chosen based on a number of criteria, and the awards are given to: 1) recognize those individuals whose research has the potential to lead to the introduction of novel pharmacologic approaches or technologies that my offer significant advances in clinical medicine in the future, and 2) to facilitate that translational process (www.aspet.org/PUBLIC/awards/Astellas_awards.html).  The $30,000.00 award can be used for travel, staff support, and/or research supplies as long as the activity/expenditure contributes to research efforts that meet the goals described above.

One of three recipients, Dr. Dasgupta will use the award funds to further her research examining how tobacco, specifically nicotine, facilitates the progression of lung cancer.  Dr. Dasgupta states that her research "tries to decipher the signaling pathways by which nicotine promotes the growth and survival of lung tumors.  On a more basic level, we try to analyze the physiological function of these neuronal receptors in the lung."

Originally from India, Dr. Dasgupta was hired by Marshall in 2007 after completing a post-doctoral fellowship that began at Columbia University and continued at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, when the lab relocated.  The award will be presented to Dr. Dasgupta at the Experimental Biology 2009 Conference in April in New Orleans, Louisiana.
