New R&D Program

Marshall University has established a new research and development program, the Marshall Institute for Interdisciplinary Research (MIIR), to focus efforts on biotechnology, biomanufacturing, nanotechnology, and applied molecular research.   Led by Dr. Eric Kmiec, MIIR has the potential to build a legacy of opportunity unparalleled in the state of West Virginia.

Focusing on entrepreneurial research through increased educational and career opportunities, it is anticipated that MIIR will have a tremendous effect on the state economy over the next 10-20 years.  In its first ten years, MIIR is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, as well as to generate $25 million in tax revenue.  During its second decade of existence, MIIR is slated to enhance the overall state economy by more than $280 million.

A legislative initiative created a $50 million endowment fund to support Marshall’s mission for MIIR.  Under the direction of Dr. Kmiec, MIIR will build a team of researchers to develop novel, patentable scientific products.   Existing Marshall researchers will collaborate with newly recruited scientists, as well as with both undergraduate and graduate students, to fulfill the research goals of the Program.  As MIIR’s projected success materializes, many West Virginians will have the opportunity to remain in-state, thus reducing the current “brain drain” and leading to a more robust state and local economy.
