Academic Festival

The establishment of an Academic Festival at Marshall has been approved by the President.  The Festival will form a cohesive group of scholars, from those who teach to those who learn.  Different than college-specific research days, this Festival will display scholarly work from numerous departments and colleges, thus building a multidisciplinary community across campus.  It is anticipated that the Festival will bolster enthusiasm among both faculty and students, encouraging them to be productive in their scholarship, while also disseminating their results.  Such an event will broaden interest in scholarship, lessen isolation within departments and colleges, and will keep students engaged in their academic pursuits.

In addition, this type of Academic Festival will provide an opportunity to highlight Marshall’s successes to alumni and potential students.  Often, alumni events or student orientation are held during the summer, which doesn’t accurately portray the campus during the full activity of a semester.  Therefore, interested groups will be invited to the Festival to learn about the scholarly and creative works carried out at Marshall to demonstrate that the university is intellectually active and vibrant, and that our institution offers students opportunities to exhibit and present their work.  Furthermore, it will encourage students to consider, and engage in, student/faculty academic collaboration.

We anticipate that an Academic Festival at Marshall will allow us to:

1.       Celebrate student success
2.       Build a strong interdisciplinary community of learners
3.       Retain students
4.       Recruit students
5.       Provide the Board of Governors and WV Legislators with insight into scholarly

activities at Marshall
6.       Share accomplishments with alumni

Chaired by Dr. Karen Mitchell, this Festival will showcase the works of both Marshall faculty and students.  The Festival will be offered annually to display Marshall scholarship to the community, alumni, Legislators, the Board of Governors, prospective students, and other members of the region.  A Festival webpage will be developed to house and disseminate the contributions of participating scholars.

The Academic Festival at Marshall will provide an opportunity to display and celebrate the scholarly work conducted at the university to a broad audience from students and alumni to the state-wide community.
