New Administrative Partners Team Up with MU-ADVANCE

MU-ADVANCE kicked off the Program’s second year with three new administrative partners. Dr. John Maher, Vice President for Research; Dr. Michelle Douglas, Director of Equity Programs; and Ms. Denise Hogsett, Director of Career Services, all joined MU-ADVANCE in the Fall 2007 semester. These new administrative partners have teamed up with MU-ADVANCE to help with recruitment and faculty development initiatives. Specifically, they are helping to create more detailed, useful job advertisements for potential candidates; making the Human Resources job site more user-friendly and up-to-date; and creating ways to showcase Marshall as a university that is striving to make a difference, both in education and research. The MU-ADVANCE team would like to welcome them to the university and the Program.

In July 2007, Dr. Michelle Douglas joined Marshall as the new Director of Equity Programs. Dr. Douglas has a B.A. in History and African American Studies from the University of Minnesota, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History, both from Florida State University. She began her career at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, as the Acting Chair of the African-American Studies Program, where she also taught History. From there, she went on to become the Assistant Director of the Office of Equity and Campus Diversity at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York. Most recently, she was the Director of Cultural Diversity and Student Activities at the Ashland Community and Technical College in Ashland, Kentucky. Dr. Douglas will help MU-ADVANCE continue the Program’s efforts to encourage search committees to be equitable and diverse in choosing candidates.

Ms. Denise Hogsett, the new Director of Career Services, is no stranger to Marshall. Having obtained three degrees from Marshall, including two Master in Communication Disorders and an Executive M.B.A., Ms. Hogsett is familiar with Marshall’s past, and is hopeful for its future. For the past 15 years she was employed by Huntington Physical Therapy, working with the human resources, management, and marketing aspects of the health care industry. Although the main thrust of Career Services is to help students find employment, Hogsett is also available and willing to help enhance the attractiveness of university departments, and the university itself, as an aid to faculty recruiting efforts.

Prior to coming to Marshall, Dr. John Maher was the Director of the Chemical Alliance Zone, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing the existence of the chemical industry in Cabell, Kanawha, Putnam and Wayne counties. In this role, Dr. Maher was in charge of economic development; an experience that will be useful in developing certain aspects of the research component of the university. Dr. Maher holds an A.B. in Chemistry from Cornell University, and has a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Organic/Organometallic Chemistry, both from Harvard. His scientific background and drive for new business will no doubt further Marshall along the path to becoming a stronger research institution. Dr. Maher contributes to the MU-ADVANCE Faculty Development Initiatives as the MURC representative, who can advise us on research and grant issues.
