The 2009 NSF-ADVANCE Program Meeting. Presentations from the 2009 NSF-ADVANCE Program Meeting, “Broadening Participation: A Societal Imperative for Gender Equity,” are now available for review. The OWL Project. A Marshall faculty member is attempting to bridge the gap between generations. Dr. Donna Sullivan launched the Older & Wiser Letter Project (OWL) to spark cross-generational conversations about the aging process between current and past Marshall students. The Offer Survey. For the third consecutive year, MU-ADVANCE administered an Offer Survey to evaluate recruitment practices at Marshall. The survey, which generated a 100% return, was sent to all new STEM faculty hires for the 2009-10 academic year. (11/6/09) More information...

 


New Faculty Fellows. MU-ADVANCE is pleased to announce that we have awarded three Faculty Fellowships for the 2009-10 academic year. These Fellowships enhance faculty development during the pre-tenure period. (10/16/09) More information...

 


Campus Conversations: The Marshall Community Works Together Toward a New Academic Master Plan. Academic Affairs and MU-ADVANCE have launched a series of "Campus Conversations" to bring together faculty, staff, students, and administrators with the mission of creating a new Academic Master Plan. Graduate Student Chosen for Prestigious Fellowship. Ms. Janet Fraser, a student in the Technology Management Graduate Program, was selected as a participant for the Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program. The New College of Science Vision. Dr. Charles Somerville was named the new Dean of the College of Science as of July 1, 2009. The opportunity to provide stable leadership to the college he has been a part of for more than twelve years was the driving force behind his interest in the position. The New Graduate College Vision. Dr. Donna Spindel was named the new Dean of the Graduate College as of July 1, 2009. The opportunity to work with numerous departments, degree programs, students, and staff to further graduate education piqued her interest in the position. (9/18/09) More information...

 


The Follow-Up Survey. At the end of the Spring semester, MU-ADVANCE administered a follow-up survey to the twelve new faculty hired for Fall 2008. The survey was to assess their first year experience at Marshall. All participants (50% response rate) indicated that they "like it here. (9/11/2009) More information...

 


MU-ADVANCE Earns Two-Year Renewal. The National Science Foundation has awarded the MU-ADVANCE Program funding for two additional years. The focus of the next two years will be to implement a sustainability plan intended to benefit all faculty long-term. (9/4/2009) More information...

 


Dr. Piyali Dasgupta Garners American Retina Foundation Award. Dr. Piyali Dasgupta, MU-ADVANCE Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Toxicology, received a $12,000 award to study the effects of nicotine on the development of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. STaR Symposium. The Science, Technology, and Research (STaR) Symposium, held April 14-15, 2009, brought together key researchers from around the state to discuss current and future scientific developments. Stimulus Program. The Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) will oversee funds allocated to WV through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), better known as the Stimulus Program. Dr. Dasgupta Wins FAMRI Award.MU-ADVANCE is pleased to report that Dr. Piyali Dasgupta is the recipient of a Young Clinical Scholar Grant, awarded by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI), to study the effects of nicotine on lung cancer development. MU Differential Analyzer Grand Opening. The MU Differential Analyzer Team is pleased to announce that the launch of the Differential Analyzer (DA) is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at the Keith-Albee Theatre. Community of Science Training. MURC will offer a Community of Science (COS) training session on Monday, March 30, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Learn at the privacy of your office, or come join us at 349 Drinko Library, where MURC staff will be on hand to answer questions. With more than 25,000 funding opportunities for travel, equipment, and training, etc., the COS is an important tool for research-oriented faculty. (3/20/2009) More information...

 


Academic Festival. In order to celebrate student and faculty scholarship, MU may establish an Academic Festival. Proposed to the Faculty Senate, this Festival will be an annual multidisciplinary display of MU's research accomplishments to the community, alumni, and prospective students. Research Boot Camp. In an attempt to encourage and increase faculty productivity, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) launched a new faculty development initiative this semester: The Research Boot Camp. (3/6/2009) More information...

 


New R&D Program. Marshall University has established a new research and development program, the Marshall Institute for Interdisciplinary Research (MIIR), to spur economic development and create the next generation of entrepreneurs in the state of West Virginia. (2/27/2009) More information...

 


Policy Update. In response to faculty concerns about the tenure and promotion process, MU-ADVANCE drafted two policies and submitted them to the Faculty Senate. Currently under review, the Modified Duties and Pre-Tenure Review policies could benefit all tenure-track faculty. (2/20/2009) More information...

 


Get It Out There! In order to reach a broader applicant pool, MU-ADVANCE purchased a subscription to the HigherEdJobs.com website, where academic jobs are posted. Dr. Piyali Dasgupta wins ASPET-Astellas Award. MU-ADVANCE is pleased to report that Dr. Piyali Dasgupta, an Assistant Professor at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, is one of three recipients of the ASPET-Astellas Awards in Translational Pharmacology. (1/23/2009) More information...
