Campus Conversations:
The Marshall Community Works Together Toward a New
Academic Master Plan
The Office of Academic Affairs has created a series of discussions, or “Campus Conversations,” to serve as catalysts for institutional change. This series is cosponsored by MU-ADVANCE, as it is consistent with our overarching goal of institutional transformation. Dr. Gayle Ormiston, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, said, “The idea of Campus Conversations is to raise the question about how to transform Marshall University, as an institution of diverse collective interests, so that actions taken on behalf of its academic mission and vision reflect its emerging priorities.” Members of the campus community will be the voices that influence the outcome. All students, staff, faculty, and administrators are encouraged to attend in order to produce a broad spectrum of ideas that can be heard and shared. The ideas will be recorded, considered, and perhaps adopted as part of the final plan. This plan, scheduled for an April 2010 implementation, will have four general foci: Students, Faculty, Academic Programs, and Budget. Using enrollment, assessment, and overall performance data as guides, the master plan will seek to improve recruitment, retention, success, and leadership skills of both Marshall University students and faculty.
Conversation 2 entitled “Developing Faculty: Recruitment, Retention,
Success, and Leadership” is of special interest to MU-ADVANCE since the Program’s primary focus is increasing
the recruitment and retention of faculty through career development initiatives and an improved institutional climate.
Conversation 2 will be held on 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 2E28 MSC (Shawkey) and at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday,
October 28, 2009, 105 Corbly Hall (Video Conference with South Charleston Campus, GC 134).
The anticipated outcome of the
new Academic Master Plan is a university
transformation, led by the identification and
development of general priorities by members of the
Marshall community. In this way, all vested parties
within the institution will have the opportunity to
be involved in the evaluation of the current
university status, the development of new ideas, and
the implementation of the new Academic Master Plan.
The remaining two Campus Conversations will be held throughout the 2009-10 as follows:
Conversation 3:Developing Academic Programs: Resources, Facilities,
and Structures
Conversation 4:Financial Considerations and Context Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of MU-ADVANCE.
Questions and
requests for additional
