Farewell to Dr. Esty

Dr. Norah Esty, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics, will soon be leaving Huntington.

Esty came to Marshall in the Fall of 2005, shortly after obtaining her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Reminiscent of her hometown in Montana, Huntington, and therefore Marshall, was attractive because of its small town appeal.

At the age of seventeen, Esty graduated with honors from Montana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. She furthered her education at the University of California at Berkeley, where she focused on the field Dynamical Systems, and in particular studied “Orbit Structure of Groups of Homeomorphisms of the Circle.” Her current research examines Topological Dynamics.

Reflecting on her time spent at Marshall, Esty has nothing but positive remarks. Leaving for personal, rather than professional reasons, Esty says that she has enjoyed both the university and her department. Her position here served as her first and has provided a strong foundation on which to build. In fact, through the encouragement of her department chair, she attended many conferences that led her into collaborations with people around the world, particularly in Germany. These collaborations will no doubt continue beyond Marshall.

At the end of this semester, Esty will join her fiancé in Boston, Massachusetts, where she has accepted a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Stonehill College.
