Dr. Mary Etta Hight will retire from Marshall University’s Department of Biological Sciences at the end of the Spring semester, after having spent 32 years as a faculty member.  After the close of her “great ride,” Dr. Hight plans to spend retirement gardening, travelling, and perhaps even finishing a book on the mammals of West Virginia. MU-ADVANCE extends a sincere thank you to Dr. Hight for her dedication to Marshall. (4/18/2008)  More information...

Dr. Elaine Baker, MU-ADVANCE Administrative Partner, Professor of Psychology, and the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL), will hand her duties to the next generation June 1, 2008.    After 36 years of service to Marshall, Dr. Baker will begin a new phase in her life: retirement.  MU-ADVANCE thanks Dr. Baker for all her efforts with the Program, and hopes hers is a happy retirement. (4/11/2008) More information...

MU-ADVANCE Presents at Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) Conference. MU-ADVANCE facilitated a session at the 2008 ASA Conference, focusing on issues of recruitment and retention (tenure/promotion, campus climate, and policies) that pose barriers to the advancement of women academics in Appalachia. Dr. Sarah Denman is… Marshall. Having spent a lifetime at the institution, beginning as an undergraduate and working her way to become Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, Dr. Denman’s role at Marshall will be changing. She will remain a consultant on special assignments, but will spend the majority of her time dedicated to numerous boards of directors in the community. MU-ADVANCE wishes her well as she enters this new phase in her life. (4/4/2008) More information...

MU-ADVANCE Initiatives Impact University Efforts. Three new Administrative Partners join MU-ADVANCE: Dr. Michelle Douglas, Director of Equity Programs; Ms. Denise Hogsett, Director of Career Services; and Dr. John Maher, Vice President for Research. (2/1/2008) More information...

As an initiative of MU-ADVANCE, recruitment is a high priority. Although the Program is making a concerted effort to change recruitment efforts, gearing toward a more diverse faculty, we recognize that this does not necessarily mean that the atmosphere will change. In other words, Marshall can attempt to recruit more women, but that does not guarantee that the offers extended will be accepted. (1/25/2008) More information...

Attrition Analysis of STEM Departments shows that over the last four years, 50% of STEM faculty who left the university (36 faculty in all) did so through retirement; 39% left voluntarily; and 11% were not reappointed (Table 1). During this time period, 5 women and 9 men from STEM departments voluntarily resigned. The percentage of women among faculty leaving STEM departments was 36%, exceeding the percent population of female faculty (24%) for this time period. (1/18/2008) More information....
