Research Dr. Williams is a social psychologist who studies social class, poverty, and inequality. The overarching goals of Dr. Williams’ research are twofold: (1) to document the lived experiences of poor and working-class Americans, and (2) to examine the correlates and consequences of how low-income people are perceived. In her first line of research, she examines the experience of being low-income, including individual and situational factors that affect perceptions of classic discrimination, how low-income people manage multiple identities (e.g., being a women, a low-income person, or a person of color), and what factors lead to the political mobilization of low-income people. In her second line of research, she studies perceptions of low-income people, focusing primarily on media representations of low-income people and how perceptions about economic inequality affect support for anti-poverty programs.
