Invitational Summer Institute at MUGC in South Charleston

Institute participants hard at workInvitation

Join us for the Invitational Summer Institute on the Marshall University South Charleston. Fellows will work on personal writing, hone presentation skills, and exchange best practices in teaching writing. By engaging in a variety of reading, research, conversations, and teaching approaches, participants will leave with an increased understanding of and repertoire for teaching writing.

What is the Invitational Summer Institute?

The Invitational Summer Institute (ISI) is a professional development opportunity offered by CWVWP for teachers at all grade levels and in all disciplines in public and private (accredited) schools. During the ISI, participants (fellows) are guided to demonstrate successful strategies for teaching writing across the curriculum and in disciplines, they read and discuss research on teaching writing, they work in response groups to share personal writing, and they explore relationships among theories, models, and research of teaching writing. Fellows are supported and encouraged to develop leadership roles as classroom practitioners, classroom researchers, personal writers, and inservice providers.

Institute participants enjoy lunch, overlooking the Kanawha RiverThrough application and interview, twenty fellows are invited to the Institute each summer. All books and supplies are provided. Upon completing ISI activities, each fellow receives a stipend of $1,000.00. Part of this stipend may be spent on six (6) hours of master’s degree credit offered at reduced tuition by MUGC.

"Students become what we model for them, and part of our influence on them depends on our own states of growth - our own self concepts - and how we communicate them to children" (Joyce & Weil, 2004, p. 285).
