Copyright Issues
Electronic reserves (E-Reserves) is the term we use to describe any library-type materials a faculty member may place within his/her MUOnLine course section for use in the traditional or online classroom.
Utilizing MUOnLine to house our materials
helps us to comply with copyright requirements under the TEACH Act and other copyright laws and policies pertaining to educational fair use.
Reserves or course materials placed within MUOnLine are available hours a day, 7
days a week from any computer with a web browser.
E-Reserves are made available to your students within an MUOnLine
password-protected course site which helps us to comply with
copyright requirements. Acceptable E-Reserves material includes any
student work that is specified in the syllabus, any printed or
electronic material (for example--journal articles, book sections,
your class notes, syllabus, links to web resources) that meets
copyright guidelines.
If you're a first time user of E-Reserves, please consult an
Kathy Saville, Director of the MUOnLine Design
Center at x63462 for tips on how to add items to MUOnLine.
If you need help putting your course materials online, visit or
call MUOnLine Design Center (CB 211/Phone 696-7117) and make an appointment with one of the student
assistants. The MUOnLine Design Center is open M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00
p.m.
Once you've assembled the materials you'll want to place
into your MUOnLine course, either (1) bring them to your
appointment or (2) email them as attachments to your student
assistant.
- Documents that are already in electronic form can be
emailed as attachments to your student assistant.
- Printed documents can be scanned by your student
assistant. When supplying a physical copy that must be
scanned into electronic form, the following tips will
improve the quality of the finished product:
- Supply clean, first generation copies with no black
margin or bring in the original.
- Be sure that all of the text is on the copy.
- Make sure that the author and title are clearly
marked with full citation on the first page (you can
write it in if it is missing)
How do students access your E-Reserves course?
When students login to MUOnLine they will see a link to
your course and materials required for reading or support.

Items to remember:
Any library-related items you place in your MUOnLine course is considered an "E-Reserve" and is subject to the copyright provisions under Title 17 of the US Code.
Any printed materials which will need to be scanned and
saved as PDF files.
When your course material is in the appropriate online format,
upload it into your appropriate MUOnLine course. Every course,
whether a face-to-face course, or an E-course, has a section created
for Faculty to place course content or supplemental course
materials.

Copyright regulations do not permit placing the same copyright
protected materials on reserve for more than one term per year
without obtaining copyright permission or paying for a license (this
does not apply to materials created by the instructor).
Copyright/Fair Use Restrictions:
Fair Use Guidelines under the TEACH Act do provide faculty with a great deal of flexibility in both the traditional and online classroom environment; however, it is a faculty member's responsibility to be aware of the provisions and ensure that all materials fall
under the copyright/fair use guidelines.
