If you are unable to register during your assigned registration
window, that may mean that a hold has been placed on your record.
Holds are placed for a number of reasons including academic
deficiencies, student status, incomplete admissions documents, an
outstanding financial obligation, or if a student has not met the
prerequisites for the course they want to take.
For assistance in this area, please call Ms. Crystal Stewart in the
Office of Distributed Education, M-F, 8:30am-4:30pm at
304-696-2970.

MUOnLine courses are equivalent to those
taught on campus so you can expect to spend at least as much time as
you would if you took the class in a traditional classroom setting.
You can also expect to do a significant amount of reading and
writing, depending on the course.

While the learning and delivery methods are different, the course
content offered in an online course is the same. Depending on the
course type, you might focus more on reading and writing rather than
listening and observing. Keep in mind that online courses are
college-level courses which offer a different way of learning. These
courses require self-discipline and motivation. Some students enjoy
the flexibility of online courses and the experience of independent
learning. Online courses definitely require focus, discipline and
determination, but the benefits of successfully taking and
completing courses online are great.

Communication methods vary from course to course, but most
instructors use email or electronic bulletin boards as their primary
methods. These are "tools" that are part of every online course.

Textbooks are available at the Marshall University Bookstore located
in the Memorial Student Center on the Marshall campus. You can order
books online at the bookstore's web site or via telephone: (304) 696-3622. For your
convenience, the bookstore web site lists required textbooks by
semester and course. You will be prompted to select the appropriate
course number and section number to view the list of required
textbooks for your course.
Textbooks for many graduate courses are also available at the
bookstore located on the South Charleston campus of the Marshall
University Graduate College. Books can be acquired there in person
or by telephone at 1-800-642-9842 ext. 2501.
Please Note:
Textbooks are available far in advance of the course start date.
Check the bookstore links for textbook availability.

If a MUOnLine course is listed in the course
schedule as offering no live meetings, there will be no live
class meeting times.
When you login is up to you, but we advise that you keep in mind
your course due dates and deadlines for assignments and exams in
your course. Since you do all of your course work and discussion
activities at your own pace (again keeping in mind deadlines for
assignments/exams), in a course delivered 100 percent over the
Internet, and with no live meetings, you have a lot of flexibility
as to "when" you actually do your work.

The requirements vary from course to course, but many courses do
require exams. Some courses may require that you obtain a proctor
for exams, but this will be fully explained to you by the course
instructor.

Online classes are offered Fall, Spring and Summer each school year. Please note that registration for an upcoming semester begins
far in advance of that semester. Online classes generally
fill up quickly, so it is best to be aware of when you
can register. Please check the Registration Timetable on the
MUOnline homepage.

Dropping an Online Course: Students can drop an online course by mailing a request to drop to the Registrar. The postmark on the request will be the official date of withdrawal. The instructor’s signature is not required.
If a student is on academic probation, he/she must have the approval signature of his/her associate dean.
Since online courses do not require you to come to campus,
your dean will need to fax or email the registrar's office
stating that he/she approves the withdrawal request.
Note that the instructor's signature is not required and that approvals of any kind are not needed if a student is not on probation.
The Registrar's Office will need the student's name, ID number, signature, term and course information in the written request.
Also, a student can request a withdrawal from an online class by emailing (using their MU email account) or sending a fax request with a signature to the Registrar's Office.
The date of the email or fax will be used as the withdrawal date.

dates for course drops.

Exact withdrawal dates are published in the Schedule of Courses
and in the annual University Academic Calendar.
The W grade (withdrew) has no impact on a student’s Grade Point
Average.
Please note that students who drop courses improperly or who
do not follow the regulations receive a grade of F
at the end of the semester or term.

Most Marshall University Online courses parallel the semester
schedule for traditional courses. Some courses may differ from
traditional semester courses in the start and end dates.
The course syllabus for each individual class and the Marshall University Official Schedule of Courses will indicate
the beginning and ending date. If the instructor specifies a
deadline that goes beyond the end of the traditional semester, that deadline will not exceed one year from the start of the
course.

MUOnLine courses are accessible to people with a
wide range of experience using computers. At a minimum, you will
need to be comfortable sending e-mail and using the Internet. For
example, during the course of your studies online, you may be
required to post messages to an electronic bulletin board, and to
prepare assignments and upload them to the course. Visit Are
E-Courses Right for You? for more information.

When you register for any class at Marshall - online or traditional
- you are automatically assigned a computer account on MUNet. MUNet
is the Marshall University computing network. Your computer account provides a username and password for access to the university
computer network. Your computer account also provides you with an
email address.
If you are an online student, you can request that your MUNet
account be mailed to you by calling Marshall University Computing
Services at (304) 696-3222 . You can also obtain your email address
with your Marshall University username by logging into myMU . Click
on the email icon and you will see your address in the upper right
corner of the window that opens.

You can access your Marshall University email by logging into myMU.
Your online course instructor will most likely use the
MUOnLine Blackboard Mail
Tool to contact you. To access the Mail Tool, you will need
to login to your online course.
Please note that the initial email you may receive from your
Marshall University Online instructor may be sent to your Marshall
University email account. Please check your Marshall University

Most instructors e-mail addresses at Marshall University are
available in the MU Electronic Phonebook Directory. If you do not see your instructor's name
and e-mail address on this list, you can also do a course search
from the Marshall University Online homepage. Information about your
course will include the instructor's email address.

The E-Mail Tool is not the same as your Marshall
University email or your personal email accounts. When you
log on to a MUOnLine course for the first time, you will see
that an email account
has automatically been created for you. You can email the instructor
and anyone else in the class, but cannot email outside of the class.
MUOnLine email stays within the course.

Yes. MUOnLine
students can access online databases, web-based digital
collections, and other library resources from anywhere, both on
and off-campus, by using their MUID number. The libraries' online catalog and more than 90 databases provide citation-level searching and
full-text articles, are accessible from the Library web site.
If the Marshall
University Libraries do not own a specific book, students and faculty can request them through
a free service called E-Z Borrow. This service enables students and faculty to search 70 academic libraries in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey simultaneously. Requested book usually arrive at the Drinko Library within 3-5 business days. In addition, students and faculty can request books or articles through the web-based Information Delivery Service (IDS), which is available 24
hours a day. Most articles are delivered electronically without
charge. There is a per-page copying charge for articles that
must be delivered as photocopies. Books from other libraries are
usually delivered without any fee except in cases where the user
elects to mail back the book and must pay mailing costs.
Students who are completely
off-campus should check out Off-Campus Library Services.

Students enrolled in MUOnLine courses are eligible
to apply for financial aid in the same way as students enrolled in
traditional classes. The Office of Student Financial Assistance website has all the
necessary information. Please note that non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid.

Payment deadlines are posted
on the Office of the Bursar website. In most cases you can expect
to receive a billing statement from the university, but it is
university policy that if a student fails to receive a billing
statement the student is still responsible for meeting the payment
deadline. If that deadline is not met, the course registration will
be cancelled.
