Tygrat Valley River Arden Section
MUWC Club Trips
April 2005
Arden has alot to offer for all levels of paddlers. Luckly
we caught Arden around 800 cfs for a good beginner/intermediate run. We
had a large crew (Jim Denvir, Jan Sikorsky, Jenny and Darrin O'dell, Kenny,
Nick, Will, James, Allen Stump, Sara Damron). After a few beginner runs
from Lovers Lane down to the bridge we camped at the ledge above the bridge for
a little beginner surfing (great place to learn to surf). We ran on down
to the Ledge and ate a little lunch. At Galloway beach the feature was
formed as a hole and proved some fun surfing. We went on down to Deception
and got out for a scout. I lead groups of 2 or 3 into the eddy and then
down the rapid. Deception was the site of all our swims. The wildest
surf was performed by Jenny O. After flipping on the eddyline above the
top hole she quickly rolled up only to drop in and get surfed. A few
seconds seemed like minute but it finally let her go and we rounded up her
stuff. If you miss the eddy it is probably best to hit the river left hole
because the right hole seems stickier. Jenny was in good spirits and
laughed it off. At Undercut half the group went ahead and ran the drop.
I showed them the seal drop off the top and it was hard to get those guys to get
off the river after that. I think they dropped it five or six times.

April 2005
Chris, John Neely and I found the Tygrat running +7000cfs one Sunday morning in April. Chris and I had never been there over 3000 so we were stoked to see what would be there. We were not disappointed. John had never been on the Tygrat but his roll and skills were up to the task. The best quote from John was, "That looks like a lot of water." He said that was we were heading down Lovers Lane. We met Chris at the bridge around noon. John fired it up this day and hit plenty of combat rolls and some sweet lines. He said Classic was his favorite. All the rapids had sneak lines but the moves where basically avoiding pour-overs and munchy holes. We ran the split between the holes at Deception which was visually impressive to be that close to house sized holes and at Undercut Chris and I took the left drift line which was cool. There were tons of new surf waves all over the place. We did not take too many pictures because we were busy running some cool lines but here are a few that Chris shot. Here is Arden Garden:
