Upper Upper Upper New River - Bluestone to Sandstone II-III (IV)

This stretch of the New can have some good catch-on-the-fly surf at levels around 10 ft at Thurmond.  There are big pools in between the rapids.  Tug Fork rapid, which is about 2 miles upstream of the Brooks Falls area, has a wonderful huge, but friendly, ledge hole on the river left bottom.  Brooks rapid has a nice park and play wave on river left with eddy access.   But a swim there will put you on course for the river left hole of Brooks which looks pretty ugly.  Brooks Falls is not really a falls but a series of ledges.  There are probably 100 ways to run it.   Sandstone according to the NPS is a mandatory portage, but there is one more rapid that is accessible from the river walk.
