    Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia

  • 1965–1968: Teaching and Research Associate,
    Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio

Department or Division Committees and Special Assignments
  • 1968:  Department’s representative to the West Virginia Secondary Social Studies Curriculum Committee. This work resulted in the complete revision of the social studies curriculum for grades 7-12 in the public schools. The work was Sponsored by the West Virginia State Department of Education.

  • 1968-78(approx.): Course coordinator for Department’s social problems courses.  This task was time consuming especially in the late 60’s and early 70’s when the Department had fourteen full-time and several part-time faculty members. It mainly involved orienting new faculty members to our social problems courses and assisting them in the selection of textbooks and other teaching materials.

  • 1980-81(approx):  Chaired committee for materials acquisition for the Social Studies Curricululm Center. About two years were spent in handling the initial acquisitions of curriculum materials for the Social Studies Center. The first year was mainly spent in combing publications catalogues and in filling out purchase orders for materials. The second, when Department funds for substantial purchases were inadequate, was spent in trying to obtain grant funds for the Center.

  • 1981: Committee to revise Social Studies 201 and 202. The work of this committee ultimately resulted in the creation of Social Studies 207 and 208 – totally new courses. And, it gave rise to The publication of my two texts for these courses.

  • 1983: Chaired committee for the development of a new course: SOS 465/565.  This work resulted in the creation of a new Departmental course offering.

  • 1984: Chaired committee for revising the Department’s graduate program.  This work resulted in the restructuring of the Social Studies M.A. Program. I was given the job of doing the spade work in the revision, Providing the initial draft copy of the revised program.

  • 1985: During Summer and Fall terms, I gave instruction on a tutorial basis and without compensation to two undergraduate students. During the Fall term, I supervised three student teachers without Compensation. This work also included offering a weekly seminar.

  • 1978-1986(approx.): SCORES Activity (Volunteer)
During this time period, I served many times as a grader and otherwise participated in the Department’s SCORES program.

  • 1980-1988: Graduate student committees and instruction.  Since the number of graduate students in the Department of Social Studies is small, almost all work with them is considered beyond the normal teaching load and is done without compensation. My records show that, since 1980, I have served as major advisor for three students awarded the Masters degree in the Department’s program. I have instructed graduate students on nine different occasions, in either SOS 640 (Readings) or SOS 679 (Problem Report). Moreover, I have served on the Comprehensive Examination Committee of four graduate students and the Thesis Committee of one.

  • 1989: Assumed Professor Charles Cox’s full teaching load during his absence for two weeks in the Spring Semester.

  • 1994-1996: Division Promotion and Tenure Committee Department Search and Screening Committee. Committee to develop new Educational Foundations Course: CTE 200

  • College Committees

1979-1981: COE Personnel Committee.  Among the many tasks that I did was to chair the sub-committee that wrote the first guidelines for the distribution of Faculty Development Grants within the College. On three occasions, I chaired the sub- committee which evaluated Faculty Development Grant proposals.

  • 1982-1984: COE Multicultural Education Committee

  • 1989-1990: NCATE Committee on “Delivery of the Curriculum”

  • 1978-1979: University Personnel Committee.  This work involved, among other things, the study of faculty salaries, revising Greenbook guidelines for Academic Freedom, Promotion and Tenure, and the consideration of many faculty grievances.

  • 1984-1985: Institutional Hearing Committee

  • 1989-1996: Multicultural and International Planning Committee
