BIOGRAPHY
Jan Faye Smith was born on September 9, 1943 in a
small coal mining town in West
Virginia. She graduated from Huntington High School
and worked at the Owen-Illinois
Factory for over twenty years. She was hired at the
plant in 1966 and worked there until it closed in 1993.
Despite the discrimination that she experienced as an
African American and as a woman, Jan continued to endure
the taxing and inequitable working conditions which
existed at the plant. Overcoming many obstacles, Jan
provided for herself and her family. In 1997, she
graduated from the Marshall
University Community College with an A.A.S. degree in
Computer Technology and is currently working on earning a
B.B.A. degree in Management. She was awarded the Academic
Scholarship for Minority Students in 1995 and 1996 and
was on the Dean's List. She still resides in the
Huntington area.
