1882 -- Tennessee passes the first "Jim Crow" law.

1883 -- Supreme Court declares the Civil Rights Act of 1875, unconstitutional.

1890 -- Literacy increases from 7% in 1870 to 66%.

Birth of Memphis Tennessee Garrison on March 4.

1892 -- 235 lynchings in this year.

1898 -- Wilmington, N.C. Riot

1900 -- Literacy increases to 66%.
