SCOTT COMMUNITY CENTER
Scott Community Center is among the oldest human
service agencies in Huntington. It was
begun by Dr. Miles Mark Fisher in the basement of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church,
one of the largest churches in the city. The Center had
to move from the church because the staff members were
seeking community chest funds, but they would not support
an agency affiliated with a church. So, they moved to
Eighth Avenue to a building between two pool rooms. The
Center was moved again because the first building was
sold to a fraternal organization. The present building,
at 1637 Eighth Avenue, was surplus property of the
Housing Authority, but HUD did not know it existed. At
first, they only rented the first floor. Then HUD found
out about the building and since it did not meet
standards for the Huntington Housing
Authority, Scott Community Center purchased the building.
A site dedicated to community-building and service, Scott
Community Center continues to carry forth the ideals and
goals of Maudella Taylor today.
