The annual Spring Fling, sponsored by the Interhall Government
Council and the Residence Hall Associations, got dormitory residents
out of their rooms and onto Buskirk Field for fun, games and food
Thursday evening.
Tamiko Ferrell, residence hall director, said approximately 400
people attended the event.
"It was a really big success," Ferrell said. "The only thing that
went wrong was that people didn't want to leave."
The IGC and RHAs served residents sno-cones and cotton candy during
the event. The two groups also provided a 70-foot obstacle course
and caricature artist.
Courtney Green, Beckley freshman, said she and her friends enjoyed
the inflatable obstacle course.
"The obstacle course kicked my butt," Green said.
Erin Compton, Oak Hill sophomore, said the obstacle course was
a fun challenge.
"It was definitely made for small people," she said. "I had tough
times getting through the small spaces."
Alicia Luckton, Beckley freshman, said she had a lot of fun watching
her friends in the obstacle course, but the caricature artist served
up the best entertainment.
"It was neat to look at how other people see me," Luckton said.
Jennifer Workman, Beckley junior, said the sno-cones were her favorite
part of the event.
"I love sno-cones and the weather was perfect," Workman said.
Sodexho-Marriot workers moved their dinner operations outside for
the event.
A picnic-style dinner was served to residents.
Fried chicken, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob
and hot dogs filled the menu.
Miranda Ellis, Gilbert sophomore, said the food was a fun alternative
to the normal cafeteria meals.
"My hot dogs were really good," Ellis said.
Justin Ruble, Bunker Hill sophomore, said the food was not very
appetizing.
"They provided a good atmosphere, but the food wasn't all that
great," Ruble said. "I did grab about eight packs of Oreo cookies
though."
Mark Izzo, Charleston senior, said the outdoor atmosphere was better
than the usual cafeteria scenery.
"The atmosphere with the fun games made it a better evening than
usual," Izzo said.
Whether it was the food or games, dorm residents seemed to appreciate
a break from the books.
"It was nice to just come outside and enjoy the weather," Nick
Smyre, Ft. Washington, Md., freshman, said.
