| Welcome to
MU: YOUR university
Welcome to Marshall University. We remember the anxiety, maybe the fright we experienced when we walked across this campus for the first time. We wondered how we were going to make a transition from the life we were used to to a life filled with new tests, professors, credit card problems, partying or not, meeting new friends and being without constant parental supervision. The last one is what hits most students first. Freedom is a word you’ll begin to like. It’s a word you’ve always known about but took it for granted because you were born in a free world. But this freedom is different. You will be free to come and go as you please, you will grow into an adult and become your own person. It can be scary. You’re not the only one feeling apprehensive about leaving your home and friends. Even we seniors and juniors, get homesick sometimes. You may begin wondering where you fit in at Marshall. It’s actually simple. Make the most of the opportunities you have to further your education. Take advantage of them. Go to class and get to know your professors. They can tell you a thing or two and most really care or they probably wouldn’t be teaching. We believe the knowledge you gain outside of the classroom is as important as what you gain in the classroom. It’s when most of us learn why we believe what we do because our beliefs are truly challenged for the first time. It’s when you learn about other people and realize how different people are. Then one of those people becomes your best friend and roommate. You’ve left all your old friends, but you get the feeling the new ones will always be there. You learn a lot about yourself. When Marshall sinks in and you’re comfortable, don’t forget your parents or the memories you’ve made. Things are changing for you but you couldn’t have picked a better place to that. And it will sink in fast. You’ll probably either love it or hate it. We suggest at least liking it. You may be here a while. So make yourself at home here. This is now your school. This is your road to the future. Questions or comments can be sent to 311 Smith Hall or by calling 696-6696.
