Huntington record stores offer wide variety of tunes and more by KRISTA CRAWFORD
No matter what type of music Marshall students prefer they do not have to wonder far from campus to find it. Davidson’s Music, Now Hear This and Second Time Around, though they are all within four blocks of each other on Fourth Avenue in downtown Hunting-ton, are all different from each other and offer more then just CD’s. Davidson’s Music, at 932 Fourth Ave., is described as an alternative and urban music store by owner Jay Mitchell. Mitchell said though alternative and urban music, urban meaning R&B and rap, are the main 2 types of music they carry they have other types of music as well as posters, stickers and jewelry. "We do body piercing 7 days a week from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and have (in-store appearances) Music group Gwar makes its way in July 8. Their show date has changed so the date they will be here is not set in stone," Mitchell said. Mitchell said that musically "this summer is going to be huge." Some new releases he mentioned were Ministry, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Best of Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and the new Heavy D. Davidson’s will have midnight sneak preview releases of some of these CD’s and others through out the summer. The store began working on adding a skate shop to the second floor where they will sell skateboards and parts and will offer skateboard customization and repairs. "We hope to have it open by the middle of July," Mitchell said. Davidson’s is also sponsoring Skate Feast ‘99 on August 7 at the Harris Riverfront Park. "It will be an all day event with 10 hours of music from both national and local bands, skate ramps, DJ’s and tons of venders," Mitchell said. The purpose of the event is to raise money to build a skate park in the Huntington area. "The skate park will give kids the opportunity to get rid of some of their anxiety and will help keep them off the street and out of trouble," Mitchell said. Now Hear This, at 1101 Fourth Ave., sells rock, rap, R&B, reggae, contemporary, Christian, classical, techno, compilations, soundtracks and more. Mark Snuffer, employee at Now Hear This and Marshall graduate, said that they buy back CD’s but they mostly sell new CD’s. "We also sell shirts, posters, hats, stickers and incense," Snuffer said. He said that some of the largely anticipated releases of the summer are the June 15 release of Mary J. Blige, Mace and Mobb Deep and the June 25 release of Limp Biscuit and Sarah McLachlan. Second Time Around, at 1208 Forth Ave., sells mostly used CD’s. "As long as they are in good condition we will buy back CD’s and resell them," said Sarah Campbell, employee of Second Time Around. Campbell said they carry almost every kind of music imaginable as well as jewelry, pipes and incense. In addition to the 3 music stores in the downtown area there are two music stores, Waves and Sam Goody, in the Huntington Mall in Barboursville. Waves is a corporate owned music store that sells CD’s in all categories of music. Trish Stewert, manager of Waves, said they sell new CD’s, tapes, videos, DVD’s, sheet music, games, magazines, and stickers. She said they will start selling incense, necklaces, candy and accessories sometime in June or July Waves recycles CD’s by buying them back and giving credit vouchers, has a Ticketmaster and 6 listening points in the store where people can listen to newly released CD’s before buying them. The manager of Sam Goody, a music and video store in the mall, was unable to comment on the store. Of the 5 music stores Davidson's Music offers a 10% discount to students with Marshall ID’s 7 days a week and Now Hear This offers a 10% discount to students with Marshall ID’s on Mondays.
