Added funds could be best
used in many departments

Marshall recently obtained $2.5 million through an allocation of $9.2 million from the Higher Education Policy Commission. The question in the air now is "What is the university going to do with the money?"

No university officials were available at press time to comment on how the money would be used, but we think that there are plenty of ways on and off campus the university could use the money.

According to the story on page one, the school is having problems paying its medical insurance malpractice premiums. The medical school is facing $1 million in raising costs and may be forced to cut back the spending on recruiting and also save money by not renewing positions.

Of course, it only makes sense to put some of that money into a fund to pay off those debts, but there are outside causes that would help Marshall as well.

Mud River Museum has hopes of helping to form a bridge between education and the arts and the communities surrounding Marshall.

If Marshall put some money into that cause, then our fine arts department and our geology department could flourish even more.

The Mud River Museum is currently displaying and selling many varieties of folk art as well as sponsoring an ongoing yard sale to help raise funds to completely open the facility.

With displays of Native artifacts and student crafts, this could be an extension of the education of both Marshall students and prospective students outside of the Huntington Art Museumıs area.

Last week The Parthenon ran a story about how the librarieswere in need of extra funding to continue purchasing new materials and continuing subscriptions to journals and other services the library uses.

There are many avenues that the university can send this funding down. It is our hope that it is not merely used to enhance the athletic department and other well-known aspects on campus. There are several other departments and areas of the university that could use extra funding.

Our money should be used on those departments who might lack in comparison with other schools in order to attract prospective students and enhance the community.
