Briefly in MU sportsWomen's soccer | Volleyball | Cross country WomenÕs soccer Marshall womens' soccer players Amanda McMahon and Lauren Scott were named first team All-Mid-American Conference for the 2001 season. "Lauren and Amanda are great representatives for us and the athletic department," head coach Teresa Patterson said of the awards. Scott, a sophomore defender from Hillard, Ohio, was the leader of a Thundering Herd defense which led the MAC in goals against, allowing just 0.76 per game in all matches. In addition to her stellar defensive play, Scott scored the game-winning goal against Northern Illinois and posted two assists on the season. "It's a great honor," Scott said. "It really represents our team. The whole team deserves the awards." McMahon, the MAC 2000 Newcomer of the Year, earned first team Mid-American Conference honors for the second consecutive year. The sophomore midfielder from Stillwater, Minn., led Marshall in goals, posting eight in the 2001 campaign. She tallied 12 assists on the season, placing her atop the MAC in that category. "I was excited that I was able to receive the award along with Lauren," McMahon said. "I wish the whole team could have been there competing in the MAC Championship. We had a really great season and we all deserved to be there." Marshall was one of only three teams in the conference to be represented on the first team by more than one player. The Thundering Herd had its best season in school history, finishing with an 11-7-1 overall record and earning its first ever MAC tournament bid. The Marshall volleyball team dropped a pair of MAC games last weekend to Miami and Bowling Green State University. On Friday, the Thundering Herd fell to BGSU in straight sets 30-21, 30-25 and 30-25. Marshall was led by Grace Jones and Isabell Anderer. The duo combined for 20 kills. The Thundering Herd also lost in straight sets to Miami Saturday by the scores of 30-18, 30-24 and 30-23. Jodi Fick paced Marshall with seven kills and 11 defensive digs. Marshall will travel to Athens, Ohio, today to take on the Bobcats of Ohio University. Shelby Pride led the way for the women's cross country team last weekend at the NCAA Division I Regionals in Lehigh, Pa. Pride's finished with a time of 22:11. Casey Batey led the men's team with a time of 31:59. |
