Graduate students at Marshall can now put their two cents in toward
affairs on campus.
The Graduate Student Council has been formed to represent the graduate
students on the Huntington and Charleston campuses, Jan Loudin,
GSC president and special education graduate student, said. It was
started because many graduate students were unable to attend the
Student Government Association meetings.
"The Graduate Student Council was started because the graduate
students at MU didn't have a voice," Loudin said.
Two issues the council plans to address are graduate assistant
pay and how to bring more graduate students to Marshall.
But not all issues the GSC covers will deal directly with the
graduate students.
"Right now we are not just thinking about the graduate students,"
Loudin said. "We are thinking about the campus as a whole."
The GSC is also working on making an effort to make the buildings
on campus more accessible to the disabled.
The GSC will also have a service project in April.
"We will hand out ribbons and information for child abuse
prevention month," she said.
The GSC is not solely for graduate students, Loudin said. It caters
to seniors who are thinking about graduate school.
"They [interested students] can find out what it is like,
what programs are available, and receive applications," she
said.
Anyone who is applying or has applied to graduate school can get
information about the GSC through the graduate office in Old Main
room 113. It can also be reached by calling 696-6606.
"It is very important for graduate students to come to the
meetings and participate," Loudin said. "We can't address
issues unless they speak up and lend a hand."
The next Graduate Student Council meeting will be Nov. 26 at 4
p.m. in the Memorial Student Center room 2W37.
