United States' partriotism returns in national recycling celebration

by BRANDON WYMER
reporter

The Mountain State is celebrating the fifth annual America Recycles Day, which begins today.

This year's theme, "America Recycles Day -- A Great Time to Renew Our Commitment to Recycling," is dedicated to the continual need for individuals to devote ourselves to resource conservation, environmental protection and the benefits of recycling, Charles Jordan, executive director of the Solid Waste Management Board, said.

West Virginians can support America Recycles Day by recycling and buying recycled goods, according to a press release.

"When you join the recycling effort you are also helping to protect the beauty and natural resources of our state, improving our quality of life and strengthening our economy. By renewing our commitment and helping to support the fifth annual America Recycles Day, we are helping our state achieve the goal of promoting the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling," Jordan said.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, a contest is also held encouraging everyone to pledge to buy recycled goods, recycle more, or support recycling events, according to the Web site, www.americarecyclesday.org. All pledges will be entered in a random national drawing. Prizes, all of recycled content, include patio furniture, a kayak, an adirondack chair and other goods made from recycled material.

State events celebrating America Recycles Day will occur in Morgantown, St. Albans, Glenville and Charleston, according to the Web site.
