A "Pay-by-Space" multi-space parking meter is being
installed in the visitor parking lot next to Corbly Hall.
The installation is scheduled to be finished by Nov. 26.
This parking lot, which was originally built for visitor parking,
is not being utilized by visitors, Capt. Mark Rhodes, assistant
director of public safety, said.
The lot is for non-permit holders.
Those with permits are issued parking citations, Rhodes said.
However, employees and students have been taking down their parking
permits and parking in the lot.
"There are no spaces available for visitors," Rhodes
said.
Chief Jim Terry, director of public safety said, "The new
meter will help remedy the situation and increase the number of
spaces for campus visitors."
Rhodes said the university has been receiving complaints from
deans and employees about the visitor lot not being utilized.
This led to the idea for the "Pay-by-Space" meter.
This solar-powered meter is cheap, mobile and easy to install,
Rhodes said.
"This system will be convenient for the public," Rhodes
said.
"Visitors will just have to go to the machine, select their
parking space number, and pay the fee."
All current meters on campus only accept quarters.
This machine will accept $1 coins, $1 bills, nickels, dimes, and
quarters, Terry said.
The cost of parking in the lot will be 75 cents an hour with a
two-hour time limit.
Rhodes said he thinks the public will acclimate to the new meter
because the system is easy to use.
"We're keeping it simple," Rhodes said.
