The Birke Art Gallery is full of photographs, prints and a variety
of graphic design work, but this time the show belongs to four Marshall
art seniors instead of artists from other places.
Bo DuVall, Tim Henderson, Chris Lamb and Jessi Walker are four
talented art and design majors, Anja Bruggemann, gallery director,
said.
"The students have been taught well and have a passion for
visual communications," Bruggemann said.
"They can distinguish between visual trash and well-made and
conceived art and design.
"Other university students benefit from these shows, because
they are exposed to well-created visual images by people their own
age," she said.
The show opened Sunday and is scheduled to remain open until Nov.
29.
DuVall said he liked working with the other seniors and said he
enjoyed the "little jokes" he caught when looking at some
of their work.
"That's the main thing I want people to do -- to walk away
with a sense of what I'm doing [with] the concepts, and they'll
kind of laugh a little bit," he said.
He said he doesn't mean that he wanted people to laugh at the
work, but he hoped they'd enjoy it.
"A lot of times people take art too serious, you know, they
just don't enjoy it," he said.
He wants people to laugh a little and hopes they do not "look
too much for a meaning," he said.
DuVall said he was proud to be a part of the show even though he
was a little nervous.
Henderson said he was also a little nervous, and very busy, before
the show. He said he slept about eight hours total in the five days
before the opening and was relieved when the work was on the wall.
Henderson and Lamb show graphic design work, and Walker and DuVall
display photographs and prints.
"[There are] two very different approaches to a show,"
Henderson said. "Bo DuVall and Jessi Walker seem to be going
for a series mentality; the two graphic designers, Chris and I,
have more of a hodge-podge of work with no clearly defined theme.
"I think the combination of these two styles together in
the same gallery works well," he said.
Henderson also said he wanted to change peopleÕs minds about graphic
design.
"When most people think of art, they do not think of graphic
design," he said.
He recalled his time as a drummer in a band, and he said that sometimes
people thought "drummers are guys who hang out with musicians."
He said he thought the same idea was applied to graphic designers.
"Graphic designers are just people who like to hang out with
artists -- they're not really artists.
"I've spent four years trying to prove that notion wrong,"
he said.
The next senior show is scheduled to open Sunday, Dec. 2 with a
reception.
The gallery is located on the first floor of the Smith Music Hall,
and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday; and 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
All gallery exhibits and lectures are free and open to the public.
