MU women ready for season

Position breakdowns:

POINT GUARD -- Melissa Arnold (5-3, senior) returns as the only starter in the backcourt.

She made her Division I debut last season and her experience should provide her with the leadership skills to run the point guard position. Arnold averaged 5.6 points per game and 3.4 assist in 2000.

SHOOTING GUARD -- Sophomores Andrea Fitzgerald and Brooke Betts are two other returning backcourt players, who will be major contributors.

Fitzgerald, 5-feet-8-inches, played in 28 games last season, averaging 6.4 points and 2.2 rebounds. Betts saw limited action last season, but is vying for time this season.

Cassie Hackworth just practiced with the team last season, but has looked strong in the preseason. She started one of the Herd's exhibition scrimmages and will provide valuable minutes.

Newcomers Susan Davis, Jamie Kellerman, Lindsay Harrison and Ida Dotson are also battling for playing time.

Dotson, a junior, may be a frontrunner for a starting position. She was a junior college All-American last season at Central Arizona Community College, where she averaged 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.1 assist and 3 steals.

FORWARD -- Catie Knable (6-3, sophomore) brings height and experience to the frontcourt for the Herd.

Knable averaged 8.5 points and 6.6 boards in 23 starts last season. She shot a team-high 40 percent from 3-point range and recorded three double-doubles as a freshman.

Senior Au'Yana Ferguson returns and will likely start at the forward position. Ferguson chipped in 7.8 points in 16 games last season.

Latae Cooley, a sophomore, and freshman Adrianne Smalls will also be battling for playing time. Cooley battled injury last season, but is back healthy and eager for the season. Smalls adds power to the lineup, but also has a soft shooting touch.

CENTER -- Head Coach Royce Chadwick is expecting a big season from Amy Reed, who is the only returning player that averaged double-digits in scoring last season.

Reed poured in 10.4 points and 5 rebounds in 22 games. She has made an impact already in the preseason, scoring 19 points in a 70-45 exhibition win over Salem-International. Senior Shawna Streeter will back Reed up.
