Backcourt rotation still unsettled for White by CHRIS MCLAUGHLIN Point Guard -- Head Coach Greg White will have his most difficult decision in deciding his rotation in the backcourt. The trio of Cornelius Jackson, Joda Burgess and Travis Young has graduated, taking with them a combined 33 points per game. In their places White will have three new faces. Junior college transfer Richard Wilson appears to be the favorite coming off two impressive performances in the preseason. Redshirt freshman Enoch Bunch also figures to see quality minutes after practicing with the team last year. The third newcomer is Kentucky Newport Catholic star Ronny Dawn. White says all three figure to see significant time early on until he settles on a rotation. Shooting Guard -- Monty Wright returns at off-guard after earning three starts in 2000-2001 and averaging 2.7 points per game. Temple transfer Ronald Blackshear will challenge Wright for the starting spot when he becomes eligible second semester. Small Forward -- Two time All-Mid-American performer Tamar Slay will return for his fourth season under White. The Beckley native will look to improve upon his 17.3 ppg with an eye on the 2002 NBA draft. Slay's primary backup will be William "Pete" Butler, who is attempting a comeback after a season-ending knee injury last year. Butler will also see time at the power forward position. Walk-on Keith Archie will add depth to the frontcourt. Power Forward -- Senior Latece Williams will again man the power forward position after averaging 10.5 points per game last year. Oklahoma State transfer David Anderson will sit out this year under NCAA rules. Anderson won the slam dunk contest at ÒThursday Night Thunder.Ó Center -- J.R. VanHoose returns after earning first team-All-MAC honors in 2000-2001. The Paintsville, Ky., native averaged 16.6 ppg and 11.1 rebounds. VanHoose will be backed-up by sophomore Ardo Armpalu. |
