STEPP: Student Teacher Extended Preparation Program

Teacher candidates are provided with additional training outside their degree coursework and clinical/field experiences through STEPP (Student Teacher Extended Preparation Program). Through this program sponsored by the PDS grant, teacher candidates experience one facet of the teaching career that without this program they would not experience until they become certified teachers and are hired within a school system. This important component of the teaching career is professional development. Through STEPP, teacher candidates receive professional development in student engagement and technology integration strategies, as well as high demand issues in education such as classroom management and differentiation. Through surveys and meetings with former teacher candidates, topics of high demand have been identified and are offered to teacher candidates throughout their junior and senior year. The following topics will continue to be at the forefront of STEPP: classroom management, student engagement, SMART technology, Project Based Learning, Reading and Writing across the curriculum, technology integration throughout the curriculum, and Dealing with Difficult Situations.

Comments From Previous Fall STEPP Sessions

  • I loved this. It was way more helpful than I knew it could be! I learned so many things and am leaving with awesome list of resources. Thank you so much! Also, all of the instructors were so kind!
  • The STEPP seminar was helpful. Some of the strategies were things I already knew, but other people did not know. Other strategies were the opposite. I found it helpful that we were able to actually try the strategies.
  • I enjoyed this so much! I was surprised that it was all instructional strategies – which I LOVED!
  • Loved all of it. The strategies were GREAT and engaging. Definitely plan to use it in my classroom one day.
  • This was a good investment of my time!
  • I learned a lot about online resources that I didn’t know. I will be implementing what I’ve learned during this session in my clinicals.
  • This was a very informative session and the information I obtained today will benefit me greatly in my future teaching career.
  • This has a lot of helpful information. A lot of the apps could be modified to use in both an elementary and a secondary classroom. I am usually nervous to use technology with young students but this has helped me ease some of my worry. Great STEPP session!
  • I had never heard of most of the websites and they were all great especially for special ed because the students love technology.
