200.005 Student Advising Policies and Procedures
Approved by the faculty, April 2012
To establish faculty, student, and administrative responsibilities within the student advising process.
Policy/Procedure: This OP will be reviewed by September of every odd-numbered year (2011) by the Curriculum Committee and approved by the Dean and the Executive Council.
200.005.001 – Mission Statement
MUSOP is committed to a program of quality student advising for all of its students. The mission of the student-advising program is to provide assistance to students in the attainment of their educational goals. The student-advising program will provide information about the requirements and procedures to attain a pharmacy degree at MUSOP. Faculty advisors will provide a professional and caring relationship that addresses individual educational goals.
Faculty advisors helping students to coordinate educational and career objectives that are commensurate with their abilities will accomplish the mission of the student-advising program. The student-advising program will also function as a referral source to other campus agencies.
Student advising is a shared responsibility among the faculty advisor, student, staff, and administration of MUSOP.
200.005.002 – Faculty
The goal of the faculty advisor system is to give the student ready access to a designated individual at the School who can help the student maximize the benefits from their educational experience and who can help with problems directly or refer them to an appropriate individual in the School or University or community.
Each faculty member will be assigned 10-15 students whom they will follow from years P-1 to P-4.
200.005.003 – Faculty advisor expectations
The curriculum of academic advising ranges from the ideals of higher education to the pragmatics of enrollment. Each faculty advisor should have knowledge of:
1. Marshall University, Marshall University School of Pharmacy, and program/department missions
2. Culture and expectations of the profession
3. Meaning and value of the Pharm.D. curriculum
4. Selection of academic programs and courses
5. Development of life and career goals
6. Campus and community resources available to students
7. MUSOP and university policies and procedures
8. Role and policies of Student Affairs
Faculty advisors will:
1. Be available, by appointment, to the students they advise
2. Initiate contact and advising sessions with their advisee(s) at least once per semester
3. Understand and adhere to the academic policies and procedures set by the school and university
4. Be responsible for involving others, when appropriate, in the advising process, insuring good communication between the student, faculty and the school
5. Assist the student in identifying academic and professional strengths and weaknesses
6. Assess student academic and professional progress
7. Assist student in academic and professional goal setting
8. Assist the student in addressing academic difficulties
9. Assist the student and enable him/her to become an advocate on their own behalf
200.005.004 – Expectations of the Student:
1. Read and become familiar with the regulations and policies as described in the MUSOP student handbook and graduate catalog
2. Preparation and initiative in finding answers to questions and in planning their professional careers
3. Prepare to meet with assigned faculty advisor concerning registration
4. Communicate regularly with faculty advisor
5. Be available for regular meetings, at least once or more per semester
200.005.005 – Role of Student Affairs
Through the faculty advisor system, new students meet and develop rapport with an individual faculty member. This relationship is of importance if the school is to establish a culture where the student has the security to ask questions and seek advice. The goal is to establish a culture of inclusion; a culture where the student feels that they are a part of the School from day 1.
The Office of Student Affairs will serve to support the faculty advisor system by supplying faculty advisors with timely, up-to-date information regarding their advisees; supporting routine advisor development workshops and education; and by assuring that all faculty have working knowledge of the academic policies, curricular changes, registration procedures, and other pertinent student services activities ongoing within the school and university.
The Office of Student Affairs will maintain students’ files and allow faculty advisors to access this information when necessary and within the limits of student confidentiality regulations. The Director of Student Affairs will coordinate the faculty advisor system and meet regularly with faculty advisors. The Director of Student Affairs will assign new pharmacy students to faculty advisors and orient new faculty advisors. Faculty advisors should refer students with problems that cannot be handled through the normal advisor role to the Office of Student Affairs. Faculty advisors may also refer students to appropriate agencies and personnel on campus and in the community.
