Advising
Academic advising is an important part of the educational experience here at Marshall. When you officially declare a Political Science undergraduate major in the College of Liberal Arts, your first step should be to talk to your advisor.
Your advisor will assist you in picking courses, remind you of graduation requirements, and help you explore options after graduation, such as graduate school, law school and/or career choices. As an adult, your choices are ultimately your own. However, your advisor is here to help you make the best possible choices for you and your future.
The College of Liberal Arts Student Information Page can also provide you with important information on choosing your courses, calculating your GPA, applying for graduation, and much more.
Advising procedures will differ for each student depending on how many credits the student has completed:
All Freshmen and Sophomores will still see their PSC advisor for registration advising and to have their registration holds removed.
Juniors (over 58 credits) and Seniors (over 90) credits will NOT see their PSC advisor for registration advising, although they are welcome to stop in with any questions.
As soon as a student passes 58 credits and becomes officially a Junior, he/she will go instead to see Kandice Napier in 107 Old Main to do a "degree evaulation". Ms. Napier will carefully go through graduation requirements with each Junior to make sure that he/she is on the right track. She will release the student's registration hold. Students will do the same thing as soon as they pass 90 credits and become officially a Senior.
Kandice Napier's contact information is here.
To reiterate: Freshmen and Sophomores will have registration holds every semester and must meet with their PSC advisor before they register to have them removed.
Once students acccumulate 58 credits and become Juniors, they will only have two more registration holds before they graduate: once when they pass 58 credits and become a Junior and once when they pass 90 credits and become a Senior. Students will have to make an appointment to meet with Kandice Napier for their degree evaluations. After she meets individually with each student and does the degree evaluation, she will remove the hold and the student may register.

Who is my advisor?Freshmen and Sophomores
Beginning in the Spring 2009 semester, Freshmen and Sophomores will be distributed amoung the PSC faculty. Students can check MyMU to see which PSC member is their faculty advisor or they may call the College of Liberal Arts main office at 696-2350.
What should I bring with me when I meet with my advisor? You should always bring the following things to see your advisor:
(1) Official Political Science Major Advising Sheet.
(2) List of questions about the major, about specific courses, and about post graduation options.
Your advisor will NOT see you unless you have these two things. No exceptions. When you come prepared, the registration advising session should take approximately 10-15 minutes.
What will happen at the meeting with my advisor?
You will show your advisor your completed advising sheet and discuss what courses you need to take to fulfill the three requirements needed for graduation: (1) PSC requirements; (2) College of Liberal Arts requirements; and (3) Marshall Plan requirements. You will also discuss your preferred course schedule for the following semester. After this discussion, your advisor will remove your hold (via the computer) and, as soon as it is your turn to register (based on number of credit hours completed and last name.), you will be able to register for classes in person, over the phone, or via the computer.
