Pi Sigma Alpha

National Political Science Honorary Fraternity Pi Sigma Alpha was founded at the University of Texas in 1920.  There  are now more than 500 chapters nationwide with more than 150,000 members.

Our own Alpha Gamma chapter was chartered at Marshall University in 1937.  Its purpose is to recognize superior political science students.  Members who go to work for the U.S. Government are entitled to an upgrade of one G.S. pay level.  To be eligible for membership in Pi sigma Alpha, students must have completed 12 credit hours of political science courses by the end of the semester in which they are inducted; they are required to have a 3.0 g.p.a. overall and a 3.3 in political science.  The lifetime membership fee is currently $40.  Recruiting is done through classroom announcements usually early in each semester.  Applications may be obtained at any time from the department secretary.

Chapter activities have included fund raising events (book sales, car parking at football games, etc.), a film discussion series, and the annual banquet often held in the spring in conjunction with the department’s Paul D. Stewart Distinguished Lectureship Series.   On occasion, the chapter has also sponsored visiting speakers from the world of practical politics.

Membership in Pi Sigma Alpha offers students group leadership opportunities and is a resume enhancer.

Phi Alpha Delta

Phi Alpha Delta is a national, pre-law, co-ed fraternity, with the purpose of forming a strong bond uniting students and teachers of the law with members of the Bench and Bar in a fraternal fellowship designed to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compasion and courage; to foster integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.

Phi Alpha Delta's motto is "Service to the student, the school, the profession, and the community"
