Countdown to commencement set for next week at Marshall University

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year, Marshall University will conduct two commencement ceremonies on the same day this spring at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

On Saturday, May 11, associate and bachelor’s degree candidates will graduate in a ceremony beginning at 9 a.m., while master’s and doctoral degree candidates will be honored in a ceremony at 2 p.m.

The university conducted two ceremonies the same day last year for the first time and decided to do the same this spring.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy last year’s format, which made for shorter ceremonies and an enjoyable experience for all of the graduates and their families,” said Roberta Ferguson, MU’s registrar. “Graduating from college is a wonderful milestone for these students, and we want to make their commencement day as memorable as possible.”

To assist in preparation for the 176th commencement exercises, Countdown to Commencement is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12-13, in the Memorial Student Center’s Don Morris Room on the Huntington campus.

Countdown to Commencement is designed to assist graduates in communicating with campus administrative offices in a central location. Ferguson said the event provides a one-stop-shopping opportunity for the graduates.

“It is a convenient way for the students to get pre-commencement responsibilities out of the way so they can thoroughly enjoy the experience of graduating from college,” she said.
The following services will be available at Countdown to Commencement:

Registrar’s Office – Students can verify graduation status, name format, and address for mailing diploma; confirm commencement participation; receive commencement instructions; receive recognition cords for military service or ROTC; bachelor and associate degree honor graduates may pick up honor cords and tassels; and report any special needs or concerns related to the event.
