Marshall Opera Theatre to give concert Sunday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Opera Theatre will present an afternoon of well-known arias, ensembles and choruses from the great operatic repertoire at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Smith Recital Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus.

Linda Dobbs, professor of music and director of the opera theatre, said that the program will  include favorites from La Traviata, Don Pasquale, The Barber of Seville, Die Fledermaus and The Pearl Fishers. The ensemble will also perform scenes from The Medium (Gian Carlo Menotti), The Ballad of Baby Doe  (Douglas Moore), Candide (Leonard Bernstein), and arias from Peter Grimes in honor of British composer Benjamin Britten’s 100th birthday celebration.

Performers on the concert will include Brazilian exchange student Alexandre Vas; adjunct faculty member and alumna, soprano Marlayna Maynard; and accompanist William Murphy.

“I’m very pleased with the number of students involved in the Opera Theatre this spring,” Dobbs said. “Our audience will recognize many of our talented students who participate in church choirs, community musicals and athletics. Join us for an afternoon of tunes – I promise you will leave humming.”
