The information learned about clients is privileged, not public information. Clinicians have an obligation to take reasonable precautions to respect the confidentiality rights of the clients they serve. For purposes of supervision, therapy and/or testing sessions may be observed. Recordings will be used only for training/supervision purposes, and will be used only within the strict guidelines of professional ethics to maintain confidentiality.
Under West Virginia law, clinicians cannot disclose privileged communication unless the client or legal representative gives written consent except as mandated by law, such as in situations of suspected child abuse, of potential harm to oneself or others, or of court-order of records.
