EMAIL COMMUNICATION WITH PSYCHOLOGY
STUDENTS
For department related messages, the Psychology Department uses ONLY Marshall email addresses to communicate with students. Messages about a variety of important topics, such as scheduling, course changes, advising, financial aid, special speakers and events, information requests, etc. are all sent ONLY to your Marshall email address. It is your responsibility to check that address frequently. Alternatively, it is a simple process to forward your Marshall email to any other email address that you use regularly. All you need to do is the following:
The process of forwarding email from a Marshall email account is pretty simple and straightforward. Begin by going to the following webpage:
http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/systems/emaildel.asp#
Once there, click on “set email delivery location”. From there it is basically just filling in the new email address where prompted (you will need your current user name and password to access the site).
If you prefer, you can access the same site by going to University Computing Services page (http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/) and then clicking on the student help link on the left hand column. This brings up a page with options including “your email account.” Clicking on that brings up a page that includes the word “FORWARD” highlighted in green in the first section (“Your Responsibility”) That link goes to the web page noted above, from which the forwarding is done.

A. You can access your Microsoft Outlook account from off campus by following the directions located at http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/systems/Exchange/outlookweb.asp
Q. What are the differences between the Outlook client and Outlook Web?
A. The Microsoft Outlook client is for users on campus. This requires installation of software to access the application, your email, and any calendar events you may have. Outlook Web is a web interface to the Outlook desktop client and may be accessed anywhere you have Internet access and a web browser.
Q. What is a Vanity Email Address?
A. A Vanity Email Address is a more descriptive email address that you have chosen (but which must be based on your last name). For example: Ann Expert could choose a Vanity Email Address of ann.expert@marshall.edu instead of the expert1@marshall.edu email address she was originally issued.
Q. Will my old username-based email address still work?
A. After establishing a Vanity Email Address, you will still be able to receive email that is sent to your username-based email address. However, you will not be able to send email using that address. When you send an email message, your new Vanity Email Address must be used. If you configure your mail application to use your username-based email address, the mail system will automatically convert that address to your new Vanity Email Address before attempting to deliver the message.
Q. Can I change my Vanity Email Address once it is created?
A. Computing Services only allows changes to Vanity Email Address names due to a name change caused by marriage, divorce, or other legal name change. You should be absolutely certain that you wish to establish a Vanity Email Address before submitting your request.
Q. Where do I go to create my Vanity Email Address?
A. To create your Vanity Email Address please go to http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/systems/vanityemail.asp and follow the directions at the bottom of the page.
How can I access university resources
from off campus?
http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/CS/helpdesk/helpdesk-remote.asp#access
Q.
How can I access university resources from off campus?
A.
•Depending on the resource, there are a variety of options. E-mail can be obtained through the web at http://mymu.marshall.edu for students and http://outlookweb.marshall.edu for faculty and staff.
• The university’s shared database system, Banner, can be accessed via
Citrix, which is designed to allow remote access to centrally stored data
and applications.
• Shared folders and files can be easily reached through the use of the VPN, which allows users to reach machines, folders and files in the same way they would on campus, without having to use fully qualified machine names or the use of FTP. VPN also allows a better use of the Outlook full client from home, mimicking the network setup of the University’s machines.
Q.
What is a VPN?
A.
VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. It acts as a private network
while still using public lines. VPN has all the functionality and appearance
of a dedicated network connection.
Q. How do I
install the VPN client on Windows 9x-XP?
A.
download instructions on how to install the VPN client.
Installing
the VPN Client (PDF) You must have Adobe
Acrobat Reader to view this document.

download Adobe Acrobat Reader
Q. I can not install the software.
A.
Make sure you are running as a privileged user. In
Windows NT/2K/XP this means you should be administrator or a member of the
local administrators group. In Linux/Unix/MacOSX you need to be root to
install (but not use) the software.
WINDOWS 95
In Windows 95, I get an error about Microsoft DUN (Dial Up Networking) 1.2
not being installed.
This means that you are running a pre-OSR2 release of Windows 95. OSR2 or
above is required for the VPN software to work properly. You may be able to
update your Windows 95 system with a newer version of DUN to work properly
with the VPN software. Please see the following
link for more
information.
WINDOWS XP
When I try to install the software under XP, it doesn't finish and I get
errors about ikernel.exe and rpc failures
There is a fundamental bug in Windows XP that may prevent the software from
fully installing. The fix is to upgrade to Service Pack 1. Here is the
announcement from Microsoft. You should
un-install the VPN client and install SP1. If you have problems
un-installing the incomplete client, see below for instructions on doing a
manual un-install.
Q. How do I run the VPN client?
A. Click here to download
instructions on how to run the VPN client.
Using the VPN
Client (PDF) You must have Adobe Acrobat
Reader to view this document.

Q. VPN client never seems to connect
correctly. (Error: Peer not responding)
A. Check to make sure you are using TCP
based transparent tunneling, which is the default. Settings for this can be
found in Options->Properties. Also make sure the port is set to 32611. If
that does not work, you can also try port 22.
If you are using a Cisco (not Netlock or Movian) client, disable IPsec pass
through or VPN compatibility mode on any Cable or DSL firewall.
If you are running any personal firewall software, temporarily disable it.
If this fixes the problem, you will need to adjust your firewall software to
allow the VPN traffic through.
Make sure you can ping MU-VPN.Marshall.edu.
WINDOWS XP
Make sure you disable the built in Windows XP firewall. It is not compatible
with the Cisco VPN client, and many other pieces of software.
